Wonder

I read the book Wonder, and it had a lot of lessons to be learned in the book. The main character is August, known as Auggie. August was born with a birth defect that made him look “different,” and even after all the surgeries he still did not find himself looking like a normal middle school boy. He recently started middle school after being homeschooled for his whole life, and that change did not go lightly for him nor his peers. People refused to sit with him at lunch; they made a huge ordeal about sitting next to him in classes also. The story is not full of sadness though; he has a loving family such as his sister, mother, father, and his dog Daisy. He also made new friends; that was not smooth for Auggie though. His friend Jack Will was not very kind in the moment and just wanted to fit in with other kids, so he decided to say not very kind things about August. Summer, which is his other friend, has always been kind and loyal. At the end of the story, there ended up having a happy ending, Auggie did not get to be “normal” like he wanted to, but he got an award and a class applause from students, teachers, and parents.

Now on to the lessons that were made in this book. August got bullied by most of the people in his life that saw him. It made him extremely insecure, and he always wanted to wear an astronaut helmet everywhere he went. Not only is that incredibly heartbreaking, but super shameful of the kids that bullied him. The point of the book Wonder is that you should never judge a book by its cover because you do not know how damaging that could be later on. If someone looks like they are in need of a friend, even if you do not think they look like a “normal person,” you could try to lend out a hand and talk to them. In general, this book was very good and very emotional, but it showed such a good life lesson for people that need it.
